A privately built castle in the hills above Mertzig, about 30 kilometres north of Luxembourg City, and one of the Grand Duchy's genuine hidden gems. What makes Turelbaach unusual is not its age but its origin: every element of it, the brickwork, the roof beams, the woodwork, the tiling, the stained glass windows, was built by its owners over a period of 40 years. No architects, no contractors.
The result is a full castle, classical in form, set in manicured gardens with green space on all sides. The interior is private and cannot be visited, but the exterior and grounds are there to be seen, and the setting in the Atert-Wark countryside makes the detour worth it regardless.
